Homemade Bee Costume

diy bee costume

We decided to have our little prince be a bee for Halloween.  He’s obsessed with Winnie the Pooh right now and the bees that are always chasing Pooh.  Plus we figured it would be a fun family theme, I’m going as queen bee and my hubby will be the bee keeper.  I tried looking up how to make a bee costume but they were all made for little girls, that’s why I decided to post this.

I bought a basic black long sleeve shirt and black fleece pants.  I’m pretty excited about this costume because he can wear the clothes afterwards.  Next I had to decide how to put yellow stripes on it.  I had a few ideas; sew yellow fabric on it, use textured fabric paint, or tape.  I’m always looking for the fastest and easiest method so I decided on the tape for stripes.  I picked up some sunshine yellow duct tape from my local Lowes store and I was set to make my first costume for my little boy.

The packaging says the width is 1.88in which is too wide for a little kid’s costume.  I used an x-acto knife to cut the tape down the middle for half the width.  My loving husband helped me pull the tape apart.  I started the stripes in the back so the seams aren’t up front and at the bottom of the shirt. I spaced the stripes just under an inch apart.

Once I got up to the arm pit and chest area I didn’t wrap the tape I just laid a piece on the front and back. One quick tip when buying the shirt, if your little one is close to the next size, buy that size.  When I went to try the top on my little boy it was tight getting it on because the tape restricts the fabric from stretching.  I’m so happy with the results and he’s going to look so adorable.  Happy Halloween!!
